The story of Funebra dates back to 2017 when we established the Garden of Memories, the first natural cemetery in Slovakia. Gradually, our activities expanded to include cooperation with other cities, lectures, workshops, publishing articles or creating ecological funeral products.
In 2021, in cooperation with the City of Košice, we established the Wood of Memories and our project changed its name from the Garden of Memories to Funebra.
Our team consists of two women, Monika and Andrea.
Monika was fascinated by natural burial movement during her academic years at Masaryk University in Brno, during which she co-founded the first Czech natural cemetery Wood of Memories in Prague and the eco-funeral NGO Ke kořenům. In the meantime, she completed the accredited course Counselor for the bereaved, the course Accompanying the dying and the course Accompanying the bereaved led by Zenith Virago, skilled death walker from Australia. In 2017, as a student of the Socratic Institute, she met Andrea, who at that time was dedicated to saving old varieties of fruit trees. Later, as the manager of the Garden of Memories, Andrea completed the Zenith Virago workshop too.
In addition to managing natural cemeteries, both of them also work as ceremonialists at their cemeteries and other places too.
Funebra is part of the NGO ŽIVICA alongside projects such as Urban Bees, Socratic Institute, Eco Schools, Comenius Institute or Black Swan.
